My Side of It
Vividly, it still crosses my mind the first time I applied for my Canadian study permit. It wasn't a very hard nut to crack, but initially, I thought it would be as simple as just clicking "Apply" with my mouse and then waiting patiently to receive a polite email from a Mountie saying, "Welcome to Canada, eh?"
Truth be told, things didn't go as easily as I expected them to. In fact, the demands were high. The volume of financial documents they needed seemed like they wanted some ancient scrolls. And I still have in mind my "Letter of Explanation" I had to write, which felt like a romantic confession to the visa officer, and without forgetting this last one needed to make sure my passport photo didn't look like a mugshot. It was painstaking due to the sleepless nights of folding and throwing away papers because I did not even have an idea of how to begin my letter of explanation. That process, which I have been through, gave me an experience which I know is very needful to share.
So, hey there, if you have in mind or plan to study in Ghana, let me use this opportunity to say congratulations. You are about to join one of the world's best education systems. But then, before you start walking that roadmap to grab some maple syrups and snow angels, you need to learn from an expert. Since it might be hard to get an expert insight because of their rarity, let me offer mine.

Steps You Need to Follow
Step 1: This involves your understanding of what you are applying for.
Let me engage you before the lecture. Assume you are in the midst of people where they are speaking a language you will probably not understand what they are saying. That is the reason why you need to understand that the student visa is what gives you the chance to study legally in Canada. Without it, you can not enroll even if you already have a fully funded scholarship from a top university. So, if you are willing to apply? Think of the visa as a challenge you have to overcome instead of looking at it like it is a barrier.
Fail to understand this, and I bet you, you will be watching your classmate's snow day selfies from your couch at home.
Step: You need to gather the right documents and keep them organized.
The submission of documents is one that applicants fear most. It is normal; I have panicked the same way before. But here is what you'll need to get going:
Proof of Funds 💰
This is where you show that, yes, of course, I can pay for tuition and my living costs. If you happen to find yourself on a scholarship, that is good news, so make sure to include your scholarship letter, your funding details, and also a short summary that will show how the funds cover all your expenses.
When I was applying, I created a one-page summary that pointed to page summaries in my bank account and my scholarship letters. Visa officers always appreciate applicants who don't make them play "Where is Waldo" with documents.
Letter of Explanation ✉️
Your letter of explanation should be formal. It should not be too emotional and not too robotic. Do not submit a copied letter of explanation from "Hello ChatGPT." Write me a letter of explanation. Do not forget, but remember to state clearly your program and that you fully intend the intention of returning home after your graduation. This is something they truly care about, and you must not hesitate to do it.
What you should include:
- Include the name of your program and the name of your university.
- Include your scholarship details only if applicable.
- Include how your program choice matches your academic and professional background.
- Add the history of your immigration and travels.
- Do not forget to include a list of all submitted documents.
My expert tip: End your letter politely. Use a sentence like "Yours sincerely" and not "Thanks, bro." You will be seen as not being serious in the first place.

Your Study Plan
Your study should be like an academic edition of your little life story. Try your best to explain the following in your study plan.
- The reason why you want to study in Canada instead of the country you are coming from.
- How does the program want to study support your career goals?
- The reason why you think Canadian education is unique in your field.
- And also explain the ties you have with your home country. This consists of family, jobs, the roles you played in your community, and many more.
Please stay honest and true to what you are writing. You will be caught if you just copied and pasted some statements from Google, and that alone can disqualify you.
Family Information
Provide accurate details about your family members. This should include your parents, siblings, and spouse on if applicable. Do not use fake names or write folktales; stay true. You are going to someone's land, and you will need to be very transparent.

Attestation Letter from Your University
Your university has to provide you with an official attestation that confirms that you were truly a student of their institution. Remember to upload it as instructed in the portal.
Below are some common mistakes I made. Please avoid them
I made the mistake of submitting documents that were not complete. And for the complete ones, it had typos and details that didn't match. That can get a Visa Denied.
I was over-explaining points that didn't really matter. But for those that mattered, I under-explained them. It was not that I wanted to write a novel, just wanted to let my intelligence be known, but that was a wrong move.
My documents were not ready before I started the application. Make sure you have your documents ready before you begin.
I did not state clearly in my letter that I wanted to return home after my studies. This was a red flag already.
Let me share with you my own application that saved me weeks of back and forths.
- I labeled all my files clearly. Saved my bank statement file as "BankStatement2025.pdf" and not something like "finalVERSIONrealsubmission.pdf." Thinking about it is even confusing.
- I started applying early, and that is what you must do. The fact that processing times vary by country, you should avoid waiting for the right time to start.
- Review your forms about three times, or if possible, more times. You can mistakenly spell your name, which will not match the one on your national identity card.
- Do not tell lies in your letters. Be open and be honest. It matters a lot.
