Breaking News: President William Ruto has enrolled for a Masters in Artificial Intelligence at Open University of Kenya
The president of Kenya, His excellency William Ruto has confirmed his enrolment in the Masters in Artificial Intelligence at the Open University of Kenya (OUK). This signals president Ruto's firm endrosement of the country's first fully digital university as at 2025.
President Ruto announced this on Monday, 13th October 2025 when he launched the first phase of the Smart City's Infrastructure when he visited Konza Technopolis. The president said, hisn governement is committed to increasing access and making available affordable higher education by using advanced technolical platforms such as the Open University of Kenya.
In his words, he said "By 2026, the Open University of Kenya will enroll 100,000 students." And that "Open University of Kenya will be the largest university in Kenya."
President Ruto affirmed his stands that his government has invested in the most advanced resources to support teaching and learning, enhancing affordability, accessibility and digital for his citizens. According to president Ruto, the cost of online resources will be low and will represent a fraction of the fees of other universities.
This brings excitement to the people around including the Vice Chancelor Professor Elijah Omwenga who praised him for his enrolment. To him, the president's enrolement serves as a vote of confidence in Open University of Kenya, not only that, bbut it also serves as a vote of confidence in Kenya's Artificial Intelligence evolution.
In the words of the Vice Chancellor, Professor Elijah Omwenga, "We are so privilleged that you will be our student. Your enrollment is a great encouragement to thousands of learners embracing the future of education"
The Vice Chancellor mentioned that the Open University of Kenya has a population of 15,000 currently of which 590 are international students from 70 different countries, signalling a growth in global reach. The Open University of Kenya has created 23 new undergraduate, master's and PhD programmes, and 24 professional development courses ranging from 2 weeks to 8 weeks to complete. The Vice Chancellor also mentioned that, these professional development courses are developed to serve as a Continuous Professional Development (CPD) courses to keep professionals updated in the job market.
He did not stop there, he added that the Open University of Kenya gives access to Twenty million digital learning resources that enables students to pursue flexible education at their own comfort zone and time. The VC mentioned that, the Open University of Kenya has established 22 collaborations with international partners and has recently co-authored one of the best and useful books on open universities, after which he presented a copy of the publication to president Ruto. The university's council Chairperson, Professor Ezra Martin hailed Open University of Kenya's global reach and recognition.

The professor iterated that, his excellency's enrollment in their master'sprogramme will inspire thousands of Kenya citizens and international students embrace the new trend of digital education through Open University of Kenya's advanced platforms.
