What to  Know About this PhD Position

For Fall 2025, Spring 2026, and Fall 2026, Stony Brook University's incoming assistant professor of civil engineering, Zhichen Liu, is looking for several Ph.D. candidates.  With a focus on automation, electrification, and connection, her research lab develops cutting-edge computational tools and models for mobility and logistics systems.  Among the instructions are, but are not restricted to:

  • AI-enabled modeling and optimization of complex transportation networks.
  • Learning, adaptation, and policy design in human–autonomous vehicle interactions.
  • Economic modeling and regulation in multimodal transportation and the sharing economy.


Qualifications for this PhD Position at Stony Brook University 

Interested applicants should have the following qualifications in order to be considered: 

  • Proficiency in programming and computational tools is preferred.
  • A strong background and interest in operations research (convex/nonconvex/stochastic optimization), machine learning (deep/reinforcement learning), game theory, or mechanism design is preferred.
  • Hold or pursue a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Civil Engineering, Industrial Engineering, Electrical and Computer Engineering, Applied Mathematics, Statistics, or a related field.

About the PI

In the fall of 2025, Zhichen Liu will become an assistant professor in Stony Brook University's Department of Civil Engineering. She has a dual Master's degree in Industrial and Operations Engineering and is presently working toward her Ph.D. in Civil Engineering at the University of Michigan under the guidance of Dr. Yafeng Yin.  She was a visiting scientist at General Motors before becoming a first author in prestigious journals like Transportation Science and Transportation Research Part C.  Zhichen was chosen as the only worldwide recipient of the esteemed 2025 Helene M. Overly Memorial Scholarship and received the Rackham Predoctoral Fellowship.
