About the University of San Francisco
The University of San Francisco is a private Jesuit university in California, the United States of America. It was founded in 1855 with only three (3) students on the opening day. By 1858, the number of students increased to 65.
Like its neighboring metropolis, USF is forward-thinking. One of the nation's first racially mixed colleges was USF. The USF football team turned down an invitation to play in the Orange Bowl in 1951, stating that they would have to leave their Black players behind. In addition to more than 60 graduate programs in business, law, the arts and sciences, education, and nursing and health professions, USF also offers more than 80 undergraduate degrees in these fields.
In 1930, on the occasion of its diamond jubilee and at the request of alumni groups, St. Ignatius College was renamed the University of San Francisco. In 1978, USF acquired Lone Mountain, expanding the campus to encompass 55 acres. San Francisco's only Division I university is USF. Thirty-one years before its 2050 target date, USF achieved its objective of zero net carbon emissions in 2019.
Students at USF come from 111 nationalities and 50 states. Raised in 23 different religious traditions. Be able to speak fifty languages. More than 117,000 USF alums reside in 139 countries, 50 states, and six U.S. territories. They operate in every field that humanity has ever known. Every member of the USF community has the same goal, no matter where they are or what they do: Make a positive impact on the world.
